Penn State Rugby Academy
Wednesday, May 21 @ 16:14:39 EDT by admin (144 reads)
Clinics, Classes, Training, Coaching
Greetings coaches, I hope this finds you well.

Congratulations on another fine season of rugby.

To those who are still competing, best of luck to you, our coaching staffs will be on hand to see your teams participate in the upcoming High School and U19 National Championships, and to all whose season came to a close before you had hoped, BELIEVE ME I know exactly what you are going through.

I would bid you all well wishes for some much deserved time off this summer, but I’m quite sure that just like here at Penn State you are already working on preparing your teams for next season. This is the reason that I am contacting you today.

Over the course of the past year or so, Coach Steinberg, myself, and other members of our coaching staffs have had the good fortune of working with some incredible athletes, elite teams, and many of the top rugby minds both in the US and the world (TEAMS - Two top 10 College sides, National Teams at the age grade and senior levels, All Americans, Collegiate and Senior All Stars, NA4 teams, Trinity, Oxford, Bath. COACHES – Dave Ellis, Peter Baggetta, Mike Kron, Mick Burns, Peter Thorburn, Jonathan Williams, Bill LeClerc, John Callard, Pierre Villepreux.)

We are very fortunate and very grateful for all that being associated with the Penn State rugby program and USA Rugby has brought to our professional and personal lives, and we are very sincere in our desire to pass along what we have learned to anyone interested in adding to their knowledge and skills in rugby. Particularly those in our own backyard!

As such I would like to take this opportunity to personally ask you to pass along the attached information about our upcoming Summer Rugby Academy to your players. This is not just another rugby camp, but a full blown PSU Sports camp. Which means that your players will be treated the same as, and have access to the same facilities as, all the other varsity D1 sports who hold summer camps here at Penn State.

This year’s academy will be held on our new state of the art rugby pitches, and again will be staffed by the coaches of both of our nationally ranked teams, current All American and All Star players, and Alumni who are current or former National Team players. We are also working on having a few “special guests” join us to work with the participants in their areas of expertise. We keep the player to coach ratio low to ensure that the campers get the personal attention they need, and the 5 day format truly allows us the time to really work on the things we are teaching, not just provide the information.

I know that many of you have attended our camps and clinics in the past, and I hope that you and your players have found them to be informative and valuable, and that you plan on returning again. I promise that there is something for everyone from beginner to All Star in our Summer Academy . Further, if they simply listen and work hard, your players will have fun, and be better rugby players when they leave.

Some of you have already contacted me about this, so I would like you all to know that if you have multiple players coming, and are interested in observing first hand or even helping out, that can be arranged as well.

Thank you for your time, and for all that you do for your players, teams, and the future of our sport. Having been at the National Tournaments in Albuquerque and Palo Alto this year I can assure you that the level of rugby being played in College now is definitely on the rise. We know that you, and youth and high school coaches just like you all across the country are the main reasons why this is true. Penn State Rugby thanks you, and wants you to know that we are here to help.

Cheers.

Don Ferrell.

Ps. If any of you have any players coming to PSU next year, please let us know so that we can reach out to them. Although we know about many of our new rugby playing incoming freshman, every year we get a bunch of great high school players who show up that we didn’t know about. We would love to speak to them about our program, and if they are interested in playing for us, get them our schedules, workouts, forms, etc.
